Redesigning a dated website or migrating from an legacy platform to Next.js, WordPress, or Webflow is an opportunity to improve speed and conversion. However, changing URL structures or removing ranking content without a migration plan can cause severe traffic drops.

1. Crawl and Benchmark Every Existing URL Before Changing Anything

Export your top-performing pages from Google Search Console and analytics, and run a complete crawl of the current site to record every live URL, title tag, heading, and inbound link.

2. Build a One-to-One 301 Redirect Map

  • Redirect every changed legacy URL to its most relevant new equivalent using permanent (301/308) redirects.
  • Never redirect all old subpages to the homepage—search engines treat mass homepage redirects as soft 404s.
  • Update internal links so they point directly to the new canonical URLs rather than passing through redirects.

3. Preserve Search Intent and Structured Data on Key Pages

Ensure pages that currently rank for valuable commercial queries retain their core topical coverage, headings, and structured data markup in the new design.

Research Basis: Google Search Central guidance on site moves with URL changes, 301 redirect mapping, and Search Console verification.
